DMYTRO SHCHERBAKOV — THE ARCHITECT OF MODERN TATTOO ART
Discover the story of Ukrainian tattoo artist Dmytro Shcherbakov (@asphalt_ttt) — architect-turned-artist known for his modern graphic, neo-tribal, and fine-line style. From his roots in design and architecture to award-winning tattoo work and teaching, Dmytro blends structure, symbolism, and emotion into timeless art that flows with the human body.
From Northern Ukraine to the World: Who is Dmytro Shcherbakov?
Dmytro Shcherbakov, known to most by his Instagram handle @asphalt_ttt, is a 30-year-old tattoo artist from Novhorod-Siverskyi, a small town in northern Ukraine.
His path to tattooing didn’t start in a studio — it began among sketchbooks, design plans, and architectural drawings.
After completing his studies in Interior and Furniture Design at the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, he continued in Architecture in Warsaw.
That education gave him a deep understanding of form, proportion, and spatial balance — elements that now define his signature tattoo style.
From Pencil to Needle — A Natural Transition
Dmytro’s creative journey started long before his first tattoo. He spent his youth drawing, experimenting, and observing the world around him. But he sought a medium that felt more direct, emotional, and human.
“Tattooing combines everything I value in art: precision, symbolism, and human connection,” he says.
What began as curiosity quickly turned into a calling. Tattooing gave him a sense of freedom and purpose unlike any other form of art.
No Artistic Background — But a Creative Soul
Although no one in his family worked in the arts, Dmytro was always supported at home.
“My family has always supported my artistic interests, even if it was something completely new for them.”
That encouragement allowed him to explore freely and carve out his own path — from drawing and design to creating meaningful tattoos that tell personal stories.
A Style that Fuses Structure and Emotion
Dmytro’s work blends modern graphic, neo-tribal, micro-realism, and neo-Japanese influences.
It’s a style defined by architectural structure, fine detailing, and harmonious flow with the human body.
“I aim to create tattoos that feel both contemporary and timeless, flowing naturally with the body and emphasizing its movement.”
Each tattoo is designed to move with the skin — dynamic, yet balanced; bold, yet refined.
Inspiration: Between Cybernetics and Symbolism
He finds inspiration in abstract concepts, symbolism, and contrast.
His work often merges sharp geometric structures with fluid organic shapes, creating compositions that feel both mechanical and emotional.
“I enjoy creating pieces that are powerful and balanced — combining precision and emotion in a single design.”
Every tattoo must feel personal, something that truly belongs on the wearer’s body.
Designing with Precision — His Creative Process
Every tattoo begins with a conversation. Dmytro listens closely to the client’s ideas, emotions, and intentions — not just what they want to see, but what they want to feel.
He studies the anatomy and natural flow of the body before sketching digitally, exploring composition, rhythm, and contrast until everything fits seamlessly.
“The goal is to create something that feels alive on the skin, not just good on paper.”
Before each session, every line and shadow is refined to match both the body and the client’s personality — turning an idea into something timeless.
From Challenge to Mastery
Early in his career, Dmytro found working with fine lines and thin needles the most demanding part of tattooing.
“It requires a lot of control and confidence — even the smallest movement can change the result.”
He spent five years perfecting clean, consistent linework — and now, fine lines have become the foundation of his style.
What was once his biggest challenge is now his greatest strength.
The Core of His Art: Simplicity and Flow
For Dmytro, every tattoo must feel natural on the body. His focus lies on composition, tonal balance, and simplicity.
“Simplicity, when done right, gives the tattoo more power and longevity.”
His pieces are minimalist yet powerful — clear in form, rich in emotion, and perfectly in sync with the anatomy.
The Most Rewarding Moment
While he enjoys designing and planning, Dmytro finds the greatest satisfaction in the tattooing process itself.
“There’s something special about the moment when a design comes to life on the skin — when lines, tones, and energy all connect.”
It’s that mix of focus, emotion, and flow that keeps his passion alive.
Growth, Recognition, and Mentorship
Dmytro continues to evolve — not only as an artist but also as a mentor and educator.
He regularly participates in international conventions, both as a competitor and judge, earning numerous awards, including 11 distinctions at the Milwaukee Tattoo Arts Festival (2025).
He’s also the author of the book
📘 “Skin Not Paper: The Modern Tattoo Guide”,
and hosts webinars, masterclasses, and personal mentorships for aspiring tattooists.
In 2022 and 2023, he was invited as a guest tattoo artist at Tomorrowland, Belgium — one of the world’s largest music festivals — where he merged art, culture, and human connection in a truly unique setting.
“It was an experience that connected art, culture, and human energy on a whole new level.”
Looking Ahead
As he continues to refine his art, Dmytro is also exploring collaborations with fashion brands that share his aesthetic vision and creative values.
He aims to keep pushing the boundaries between tattooing, design, and lifestyle.
“I want to keep growing, teaching, and creating — connecting people through art that truly means something.”
