Aninha: Stories in a Single Line – The Journey of Ana Laura Iembo Hernandes
In collaboration with Tattoogenda, we bring you the story of Ana Laura Iembo Hernandes—better known in the tattoo world as Aninha. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and now based in São Paulo, Aninha is a 28-year-old tattoo artist who has built a name for herself through delicate, minimalist tattoos that speak volumes with just a few lines.
Rooted in Art, Against the Odds
Aninha always knew she’d be covered in tattoos—but becoming a tattoo artist herself wasn’t part of the original plan. “I’ve always loved art,” she says, “but I grew up being told it should only be a hobby.” Luckily, her aunt Leila, a painter, gifted her art books and nurtured her creativity from a young age—keeping her connected to the artistic path.
Later, she chose to study Advertising, thinking it would lead to a creative career. “But I was quickly disappointed. It didn’t fulfill my artistic side at all.” She found herself turning back to illustration, taking on informal commissions—and that led to a defining moment.
One Drawing That Changed Everything
A friend asked her to illustrate a tattoo idea she couldn’t express in words. Aninha created the drawing just for fun—but the friend’s reaction was life-changing: “I love it! Why don’t you learn to tattoo and do it on me?”
From that moment on, Aninha was all in.
A Challenging Start, and a Rise to Independence
Getting started wasn’t easy. It took nearly a year to land an opportunity to learn from a professional. But after just one month in a studio, her mentor left, and Aninha suddenly found herself as the sole tattoo artist there—figuring things out completely on her own.
Now, nine years later, she reflects on that tough beginning with pride. “It was hard, but I’m grateful for everything I learned. I feel lucky every day to do what I love.”
Aninha’s Signature Style: Minimalist with Maximum Emotion
Aninha’s work is characterized by minimalist designs, fine line precision, and a deep connection to her clients’ stories. “Many people come to me to mark a turning point in their lives, to honor someone they love, or to heal.”
Her favorite themes? Portraits and single-line art—designs created with one continuous stroke. “I love the challenge of creating meaning without ever lifting the pencil.”
A Creative Process Built on Collaboration
All of Aninha’s designs are created together with the client, in person. On the day of the session, they sit down, look at references, and translate feelings into forms. “Everything is built right there with them, and we tattoo on the same day.”
One of the last techniques she mastered was using thick lines, something she once thought didn’t fit her aesthetic. “But I’ve learned to use them subtly, in a way that still feels light and delicate.”

Precision, Passion, and Growth
Ask Aninha what she loves most, and she won’t hesitate: “The final lines. That little breath-holding moment of precision—it’s the best part.”
As for growth, she believes in stepping outside her comfort zone, traveling, doing guest spots, and constantly learning from other artists. “The more I connect with different ways of working, the more I evolve.”
