MrPixel.Tattooer: The Art of Nostalgia Through Pixel Tattoos
My name is MrPixel.Tattooer, 34, and I’m from Singapore. Growing up in the 90s, I was immersed in the world of video games like Super Mario, Contra, and Pokemon. These games weren’t just pastimes; they sparked my creativity and led me to explore the world of art. From a young age, I was drawn to the art of nostalgia, which eventually influenced my unique tattoo style. In addition to my work as a tattoo artist, I’m also passionate about music and interior design.
Family Influence and the Path to Tattooing
Raised in a traditional Asian family, pursuing a career in art wasn’t encouraged, but my father’s own tattoos sparked my curiosity about the world of tattoos. As I grew older, this curiosity developed into a passion. While my family didn’t initially support the idea of me becoming a tattoo artist, they are now very supportive of my career.
Tattoo Journey: Self-Taught and Always Evolving
I began tattooing full-time during the COVID-19 pandemic, and unlike many, I didn’t undergo a formal apprenticeship. Instead, I learned through friendships with talented artists who generously shared their knowledge. I traveled the world to expand my experience and skills, gaining exposure and learning from a global community of artists.
A Natural Learner: Overcoming Challenges
From a young age, I considered myself a fast learner. I was able to break down complex knowledge and techniques into manageable steps, which greatly aided my tattoo education. Hard work, humility, and an openness to feedback have been key factors in my journey. Every day is a learning experience, and I continuously strive to improve my craft.
A Lifelong Passion for Tattooing
Tattooing has never felt like a job to me; it’s my passion. Being able to create art every day and make a living doing what I love is a dream come true. My commitment to tattooing remains as strong as it was when I first started.
Unique Style: Pixel Art Tattoos
My tattoo style is deeply influenced by the nostalgic pixel art of early video games. Pixel art tattoos require precision and creativity, often evoking memories of childhood games. I aim to create tattoos that serve as vivid reminders of simpler times and resonate with those who grew up in the digital age. Every piece I create is designed to capture that nostalgic feeling while being a unique form of body art.
Favorite Subject: Mash-ups of Video Game Characters
I particularly enjoy creating mash-ups of different video game characters. Combining my clients’ favorite characters into one cohesive design creates a deeply personal and meaningful piece of art. One memorable piece was a full evolution of Charizard, which won 2nd place in the Best Small Color category at The Lion’s Gate Singapore Tattoo Convention.
The Design Process: Crafting Pixel Perfection
When a client requests a design, I start with a concept and references. I then create a draft using pixel software, ensuring the design is tailored to their vision. Once completed, I send the design to the client for approval. Occasionally, I also create flash designs, especially for those I wish to tattoo myself.
Mastering the Art of Pixel Tattoos
When I first started tattooing, I focused on black and grey work, but transitioning to color tattoos, especially pixel art, presented new challenges. Pixel tattoos, by their very nature, require high precision, and I needed to ensure every detail was correct. Over time, I worked on improving my technique, even tackling smaller pixels to capture more intricate details. While challenging, the results are always worth the effort.
The most critical element of my tattoos is the sense of nostalgia they evoke. I always strive to design tattoos that are unique to my clients, reflecting their personal histories and childhood memories. By stepping into my client’s shoes and revisiting their past, I aim to create a design that brings back the emotions and memories of their youth.
The Most Satisfying Part: Full Process Experience
The tattooing process is about more than just the design or the application; it’s about the entire experience. From the first inquiry to aftercare, I want my clients to feel comfortable and satisfied with every step.
Panel of Judge for Ancona International Tattoo Convention
Being invited to judge conventions such as the Ancona International Tattoo Convention in Italy or the Ligligan International Convention in Clark has also been a fulfilling experience for me. It allows me to share my knowledge and contribute to the broader tattoo community.
To continue growing as a tattoo artist, I plan to travel the world, meeting other artists and exchanging ideas. I’m eager to compete in more conventions, both to challenge myself and to give back to the tattoo industry. I also hope to serve as an ambassador for my sponsors, such as World Tattoo Events, Drpickles, and Poseidon Tattoo, helping to introduce these incredible products and communities to fellow tattoo artists and enthusiasts.
