From drawing fake tattoos on classmates with gel pens to earning more than twenty awards at international tattoo conventions, Artyom Bychkov has built a career driven by creativity, discipline, and an endless desire to evolve. Today, the Kazakhstan-born tattoo artist is known for his versatility, artistic vision, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of tattooing.
Growing Up Surrounded by Art
Born in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, Artyom’s connection to art began long before he ever touched a tattoo machine. His grandfather was a painter, and creativity was a constant presence throughout his childhood. Surrounded by canvases, brushes, and paints, drawing became second nature to him from an early age.
As a child, he attended art school before continuing his education in interior design. While studying, however, he became increasingly frustrated by how dependent modern design had become on computers and software. He wanted something more hands-on—something that felt alive and personal.
The Tattoo That Changed Everything
At the age of fifteen, Artyom received his first tattoo, an experience that would ultimately change the course of his life. Fascinated by the atmosphere, technique, and energy surrounding tattooing, he immediately felt drawn to the craft.
Looking back, the signs had been there all along. During his school years, he frequently drew temporary tattoos on classmates using gel pens, unknowingly laying the foundation for his future career.
The true turning point came when a friend showed up with a homemade tattoo machine and asked Artyom to tattoo him. Despite the improvised circumstances, the experience sparked something powerful. Tattooing combined everything he loved about art while introducing entirely new challenges—working on living skin, managing movement, emotions, responsibility, and technique all at once.
From Home Studio to Professional Artist
After completing that first tattoo, Artyom became determined to learn more. He invested in his first equipment and spent countless hours practicing on friends, family members, and even his own father.
He started tattooing at sixteen and, remarkably, opened his first small tattoo studio by the age of seventeen. What began as a passion quickly became a profession, although Artyom believes the learning process never truly ends. Even after fourteen years in the industry, he continues experimenting with new techniques and constantly refining his craft.
Refusing to Be Limited by One Style
Unlike many artists who specialize in a single niche, Artyom has always preferred exploration over limitation. His artistic journey started with lettering and simple tattoos before expanding into grey wash, black and grey realism, color realism, and larger, more complex compositions.
While realism remains an important part of his portfolio, he regularly shifts between different styles to keep his creativity fresh. Calligraphy, in particular, plays a major role in his artistic expression. For Artyom, lettering offers a form of meditation and creative freedom that balances the technical intensity of large-scale realism projects.
Rather than identifying himself with a single style, he focuses on expressing ideas, emotions, and personal vision through every piece he creates.
Understanding the Person Behind the Tattoo
Technical ability is only one aspect of tattooing that interests Artyom. Throughout his career, he has developed a strong interest in psychology and communication, believing that truly great tattoos emerge from understanding the client on a deeper level.
He invests time in understanding each person’s story, emotions, and motivations, allowing him to create designs that feel personal and meaningful.
For Artyom, the strongest tattoos are born when artist and client connect naturally and communicate beyond words.
Beyond Tattooing: Calligraphy and Custom Clothing
Creativity for Artyom does not stop at tattooing. One of his greatest passions outside the studio is custom clothing design. He creates hand-painted garments, experiments with typography and textures, and explores visual concepts across different mediums.
Calligraphy remains a central influence throughout all of his work. The movement of lines, contrast, rhythm, and emotion found in lettering continuously inspire both his tattoos and clothing designs. Working across multiple creative disciplines allows him to recharge while remaining connected to artistic expression.
Finding Inspiration Through Travel and Discipline
For Artyom, inspiration cannot be forced. Instead, it emerges naturally through experiences, cultures, people, and emotions. This philosophy has led him to spend much of his adult life traveling and working internationally.
Each country leaves a lasting impression through its architecture, traditions, music, and atmosphere, all of which eventually find their way into his artwork. Yet one of the most surprising sources of inspiration in his life is discipline itself.
A healthy lifestyle, regular training, and strong personal discipline help him maintain mental clarity and balance. He believes that creativity flourishes when both mind and body are aligned, allowing ideas to flow more naturally and consistently.
Building a Reputation on the Convention Circuit
Artyom attended his first tattoo convention in 2016, traveling more than 4,000 kilometers with friends to participate. Although he was still early in his career, the experience proved transformative. Seeing world-class artists firsthand gave him a clearer understanding of the level he wanted to reach.
Instead of feeling discouraged, he used the experience as motivation. Over the years, he continued refining his skills and became an active competitor on the convention circuit. Today, he has earned more than twenty awards across multiple countries and categories.
Yet despite these achievements, he views every convention as another opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with fellow artists from around the world.
A Life Without Borders
After moving from Shymkent to Almaty at the age of twenty, Artyom realized that staying in one place was never part of his plan. For nearly a decade, he has lived and worked across different countries, embracing new cultures and experiences wherever he goes.
He feels particularly connected to tropical destinations and island life, where the combination of sunlight, ocean air, and a relaxed atmosphere fuels his creativity. Today, rather than identifying with a single location, Artyom considers home to be the journey itself—a continuous exploration of art, culture, and personal growth.
Looking Forward
Fourteen years after creating his first tattoo, Artyom Bychkov remains as passionate as ever about the craft. His journey—from a young artist inspired by his grandfather’s paintings to an internationally recognized tattoo professional—reflects a commitment to lifelong learning and artistic evolution.
Whether through realism, calligraphy, custom clothing, or future convention appearances, Artyom continues to pursue one goal above all else: creating meaningful art while constantly pushing himself to grow as both an artist and a person.
