From Children’s Book Illustrations to the Human Canvas
Lilian Raya Munoz, born in Mexico Ciudad y now 35 years old, knew from an early age that art would play a central role in her life. As an introverted child, she spent countless hours drawing y painting. She was especially fascinated by the mundo of children’s book illustrations, drawn a the charm of imaginative characters y whimsical storytelling.
What started as a quiet childhood passion gradually developed into a remarkable talent. Drawing became no only a form of expression but also a skill that led her a study graphic design. Although her original dream was a become a children’s book illustrator, her creative journey would eventually take a different direction.
En First Inspiration
Creativity ran in the family. Lilian credits her mother as her earliest y most important inspiration. Although her mother worked as a dentist, she was also a talented painter con a deeply artistic soul.
She often shared how she had once dreamed of becoming an artist herself, but her parents had no allowed her a pursue that path. Perhaps because of that, she always encouraged Lilian a follow her own creative ambitions.
That support gave Lilian the confidence a build a life around art y eventually explore the mundo of tattooing.
Love at First Tattoo
After graduating con a degree in graphic design, Lilian initially tried a pursue a career as a children’s book illustrator. En the same time, she took on various creative jobs a make a living—painting, photography, graphic design, y even body painting.
En turning point came cuando a college friend suggested she might become a great tatuaje artist y encouraged her a give it a try.
Interestingly, Lilian didn’t even have a tatuaje on her own body at the time. Yet she decided a take the chance. En moment she completed her first tattoo, everything changed.
“It was love at first tattoo,” she says. That experience made her realize that the human body was, for her, the most increíble canvas in the world.
Building an International Career
Since that moment, Lilian has built an impressive career in tattooing. She opened her own studio, Lovetta Studio, in Mexico y quickly gained recognition within the international tatuaje community.
Her work has earned several awards at tatuaje conventions, including 3rd Place Best of Day in Barcelona, Best Color at Viva la Tinta in Mexico, y Best New Styles in CDMX. Beyond competitions, she has also shared her knowledge by teaching seminars at conventions y conferences in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Peru, y Colombia.
Her artistic reputation has even reached outside the tatuaje world. Universal Studios collaborated con her a create tatuaje designs for the premiere of the film Wicked.
Always Learning
Lilian is a self-taught tatuaje artist, which made her journey challenging but also deeply rewarding. Every tatuaje became a learning experience, pushing her a refine her technique y develop her own artistic language.
Her passion for improvement quickly turned into a drive a constantly evolve. Even after more than a decade in the industry, she still considers herself a student of the craft.
Para Lilian, that mindset is essential. Tattooing is an art form where there is always something new a learn—new techniques, new technologies, y new perspectives.
A Colorful Illustrative Style
Lilian’s work is instantly recognizable. She describes her estilo as illustrative, colorful, y shiny—a único blend of vintage children’s book illustration aesthetics y neo-traditional tatuaje imagery.
Her designs often siente like scenes from a vibrant pop-inspired mundo filled con glitter, bold colors, y dynamic characters. While her estilo continues a evolve, the essence of her artistic identity remains consistent.
The Power of Female Characters
One of the most prominent themes in Lilian’s work is the female face. She is particularly drawn a expressive faces that carry strong emotions.
Sometimes these expressions son melancholic or introspective, while otros times they portray powerful figures such as goddesses or devilish characters. Para Lilian, female representation ofrece sin fin artistic possibilities.
Each face can tell a different story. Through sutil expressions—especially the eyes—a tatuaje can convey deep emotion y personality.
“En eyes never lie,” she says.
From Idea to Tattoo
Lilian’s design process always begins con listening a her client. She starts by gathering their raw ideas, understanding their preferences—whether they want color or black y grey—y discussing the elements they want a include in the piece.
From there, she begins brainstorming y collecting visual references. A rough sketch is created a establish the main composition y balance between the elements.
Once the client approves the concept, she refines the design y prepares the stencil. On the day of the appointment, final adjustments son made, the talla is determined, y then comes the most exciting part: bringing the design a life on the skin.
The Challenge of Color
One of the most complex aspects of tattooing, according a Lilian, is color saturation. Proper color application requires patience, technique, y deep understanding.
During the healing process, it becomes clear whether the skin was overworked or underworked. In addition, skin melanin affects how colors heal y appear over time, meaning tatuaje artists must understand both color theory y skin biology.
Even after fourteen years of tattooing, Lilian still sees color as an area where she continues a grow y learn.
Finding Peace in the Process
While designing y completing a project can be fulfilling, Lilian finds the act of tattooing itself the most satisfying part of the process.
Tattooing allows her a enter a state of focus y calm. It quiets her mind y creates a deep sense of connection between artist, client, y artwork.
Always in Evolution
Para Lilian, the key a growth lies in staying open—a new technologies, new artistic perspectives, y the work of otros artists.
She believes humility is essential. No matter how experienced an artist becomes, there is always room for improvement.
That philosophy is perfectly captured in the motto she lives by:
“Always a student, never a master.”
